iRobot Sponsors Program to Inspire New Generation of Robot Engineers

Brings K-12 Students to See Robots at RoboNexus 2005

BURLINGTON, Mass., Oct. 6, 2005 – iRobot Corp. today announced it will bring the next generation of budding roboticists to see the latest in robots — live and in person. Along with Google Inc., iRobot is cosponsoring the RoboNexus Educational Outreach Program, which sponsors admission and transportation for kindergarten through 12th-grade students from local schools to the RoboNexus 2005 show at the San Jose Convention Center in San Jose, Calif.

The students will attend the show on RoboNexus Education Day, Friday, Oct. 7. iRobot will also host three separate hands-on, interactive sessions on how robots work and what it takes to build robots. Students will get to see and touch the “guts” of a robot. Last year, more than 1,500 children representing 21 schools attended RoboNexus on sponsorships from the RoboNexus Educational Outreach Program.

“iRobot believes in inspiring the students of today and engineers of tomorrow by supporting their exploration of new frontiers in technology,” said Helen Greiner, chairman and cofounder of iRobot. “People’s fascination with robots often begins in childhood, and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to give students a meaningful encounter with robots that could foster an exciting future career.”

“Robots inculcate an interest in science and increase self-esteem, as well as teach basic life skills such as problem solving, decision making, goal setting and logical thinking,” said Dan Kara, president of Robotics Trends. “But for robotics to inspire school-age children, those children must come into contact with multiple forms of real-world robots, meet with robotics experts and interact with their school-age peers who are already involved with robots. Robotics Trends thanks iRobot for providing students with just that opportunity through its support of the RoboNexus Educational Outreach Program.”

RoboNexus 2005 takes place Oct. 6-9. RoboNexus is the international consumer, educational and business development event for personal, service and mobile robots. For more information on the show, please visit www.robonexus.com.
